The presence of heavy metals in the air, soil and water is a global problem which means a growing threat to the environment and also to the human health. In response to this growing problem there is an increasing concern about the development of fast and effective techniques for in- situ monitoring of heavy metals. Here we summarize the last trends in macro, micro and nanostructurated materials uses in heavy metal sensing mechanisms studies and applications in various fields.
